Saxenda and Atkins Diet

The Atkins Diet is a low-carbohydrate diet that is designed to promote weight loss. The induction phase of the Atkins Diet, also known as the “Atkins 20” phase, is the first and most restrictive phase of the diet. It typically lasts two weeks and involves consuming no more than 20 grams of carbohydrates per day. The goal of the induction phase is to help the body switch from using carbohydrates for energy to using fat for energy, a process known as ketosis.

Combining Saxenda Weight Loss with a Low-carb lifestyle like Atkins, can dramatically improve weight loss results. Maintaining ketosis (the fat-burning stage) is the key to your success.

*Saxenda is a clinically proven weight loss injection by leading pharmaceutical manufacturer Novo Nordisk.

Atkins Dietary Steps for Ketosis During Induction Phase

To supercharge weight loss with the Atkins induction phase, there are several strategies you can try:

  1. Stick to the recommended daily carbohydrate intake: During the induction phase, it is important to stick to the recommended daily carbohydrate intake of 20 grams or less to ensure that the body is in ketosis.
  2. Focus on high-fat, low-carb foods: During the induction phase, it is important to focus on high-fat, low-carb foods such as meats, eggs, and cheese. These foods can help to promote ketosis and weight loss.
  3. Eat plenty of non-starchy vegetables: Non-starchy vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, and spinach are low in carbs and fiber, making them a good choice for the induction phase. Remember, less than 20 grams of carbs.
  4. Drink plenty of water: Staying hydrated can help to flush toxins out of the body and promote weight loss.
  5. Exercise regularly: In addition to following the diet, regular exercise can help to boost weight loss and improve overall health.

How Long Before You Enter Ketosis on Atkin’s - < 20g Carbs?

The amount of time it takes to enter ketosis on a low-carb diet varies depending on several factors, including the individual’s starting carbohydrate intake, the number of carbohydrates consumed, and the individual’s activity level. In general, it is typically recommended to consume 50 grams or less of carbohydrates per day to enter ketosis. Since you will be in the Atkins Induction phase (less than 20g), it should take 24-36 hours.

For some people, it may take as little as a few days to enter ketosis on a low-carb diet, while for others it may take longer. Some people may also experience symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, and irritability as they adjust to the diet. These symptoms are often referred to as “keto flu” and typically resolve within a few days.

What is Ketosis Exactly?

Ketosis is a metabolic state in which the body burns fat for energy instead of carbohydrates. When the body is in ketosis, it produces molecules called ketones, which are produced from the breakdown of fat in the liver.
Ketosis can be induced by following a low-carbohydrate diet, such as the Atkins Diet or the ketogenic diet. These diets are designed to restrict carbohydrate intake and promote the production of ketones. Ketosis can also occur as a result of fasting or prolonged exercise.

During ketosis, the body uses ketones as an alternative source of energy to glucose, which is typically derived from carbohydrates. When the body is in ketosis, it may be able to burn stored fat more efficiently, which can lead to weight loss. Ketosis may also have other potential health benefits, including improved blood sugar control and reduced inflammation.

What About Hypoglycemia?

Hypoglycemia is a condition characterized by low blood sugar levels. It can occur in people who have diabetes or in people who do not have diabetes but are following a low-carbohydrate diet, such as the Atkins Diet or the ketogenic diet.

During ketosis, the body burns fat for energy instead of carbohydrates. When the body is in ketosis, it may be more sensitive to changes in blood sugar levels, which can increase the risk of hypoglycemia. This is because the body may not be able to produce enough glucose to meet its energy needs, leading to low blood sugar levels.

Symptoms of hypoglycemia may include dizziness, fatigue, tremors, sweating, and confusion. If left untreated, hypoglycemia can lead to more serious complications, such as seizures or coma.

To prevent hypoglycemia, it is important to monitor blood sugar levels closely and to have a source of fast-acting carbohydrates on hand in case of a low blood sugar episode. It is also important to discuss any dietary changes with a healthcare provider and to follow a healthy, balanced diet.

How do I know I am in Ketosis?

There are several ways to determine whether you are in ketosis, including:

Testing ketone levels in the urine: Ketone strips, which are available at most pharmacies, can be used to test the level of ketones in the urine. To use a ketone strip, you simply need to wet the strip with urine and then compare the color of the strip to the color chart provided. The darker the color, the higher the level of ketones in the urine.

Testing ketone levels in the blood: A blood ketone meter can be used to measure the level of ketones in the blood. To use a blood ketone meter, you will need to prick your finger with a lancet and then place a drop of blood on a test strip, which is then inserted into the meter. The meter will display the level of ketones in the blood.

Monitoring physical symptoms: Some people may experience physical symptoms when they are in ketoses, such as bad breath, dry mouth, and decreased appetite.

It is important to note that the presence of ketones in the urine or blood does not necessarily mean that you are in ketosis. Ketones may also be present in the urine or blood as a result of other factors, such as alcohol consumption or certain medications. It is important to discuss any concerns about ketosis with a healthcare provider.

As measured by a blood ketone meter, 1.0 – 3.0 is the ideal ketosis for weight loss.

How much weight loss per week on Atkins?

The amount of weight you lose on the Atkins diet will depend on several factors, including your starting weight, how closely you follow the diet, and how much physical activity you get. It is generally recommended to aim for a weight loss of 1-2 pounds per week, which is a safe and sustainable rate of weight loss. However, some people may lose more weight in the beginning of the Atkins diet, especially if they have a significant amount of weight to lose. It is important to remember that weight loss may not be linear and may fluctuate from week to week.

It is also important to note that the Atkins diet is a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet that restricts the intake of certain types of carbohydrates. While it can be effective for weight loss, it may not be suitable for everyone and should be followed under the guidance of a healthcare professional. It is important to make sure you are getting all the nutrients your body needs while following any diet.

How will Saxenda Help me lose weight?

Saxenda (liraglutide) is a prescription medication that is used as an injectable treatment for obesity. It is a type of medication called a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, which works by helping to regulate appetite and metabolism.

Saxenda can be used as an adjunctive treatment to a reduced-carbohydrate diet and increased physical activity for chronic weight management in adults with an initial body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater (obese) or 27 or greater (overweight) in the presence of at least one weight-related medical condition, such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes.

Saxenda is not a quick fix for weight loss, and it is important to follow a healthy lifestyle, including a restricted diet and increased physical activity while taking this medication. Saxenda can help you lose weight by reducing your appetite and increasing the feeling of fullness after eating, which can help you eat fewer calories, reduce carb cravings, and lose weight over time.

It is important to note that Saxenda is a prescription medication and should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional. If you are interested in using Saxenda for weight loss, you should speak with your healthcare provider to determine if it is appropriate for you and to discuss the potential risks and benefits of using this medication.

How long can I Remain on Saxenda?

Saxenda (liraglutide) is a prescription medication that is used as an injectable treatment for obesity. It is typically used as an adjunctive treatment to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for chronic weight management in adults with an initial body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater (obese) or 27 or greater (overweight) in the presence of at least one weight-related medical condition, such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes.

The length of time that you can remain on Saxenda will depend on several factors, including your response to the medication and any side effects you may experience. Saxenda is typically taken once daily, and the recommended starting dose is 0.6 mg injected subcutaneously (under the skin) once daily for one week, followed by an increase to the maintenance dose of 1.8 mg injected once daily. The maintenance dose can be increased in increments of 0.6 mg at intervals of one week or longer, up to a maximum dose of 3.0 mg once daily if needed.

It is important to note that Saxenda is a prescription medication and should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional. If you are taking Saxenda and have questions about how long you can remain on the medication, you should speak with your healthcare provider.

How long Can I Remain on Atkins?

It is generally recommended to follow the Atkins diet for a period of time that is appropriate for your weight loss goals. For example, if you have a significant amount of weight to lose, you may need to follow the diet for a longer period of time. However, if you only have a small amount of weight to lose or if you have reached your weight loss goals, you may be able to transition to a less restrictive diet.

We usually suggest you remain on the diet until you reach a healthy BMI level.
