What's the Difference Between Wegovy and Saxenda
Wegovy (semaglutide) and Saxenda (liraglutide) are both injectable medications FDA-approved for weight loss. Wegovy is injected once weekly. Saxenda is injected once daily.
The first medication FDA-approved for weight loss was Saxenda. More recently, Wegovy has been approved for weight loss. Both were marketed beforehand as diabetic medications.
In a recent study, patients injecting Wegovy saw more weight loss than those who were studied with Saxenda. However, more study is needed to conclude if one medication is superior to the other. The difference in study design, size of the study, and length can all affect outcomes.
How much weight can I lose?
Liraglutide (Saxenda) has been evaluated in two double-blind studies of more than 3,000 obese or overweight patients with hyperlipidemia, hypertension, or diabetes. In both studies, adding liraglutide to lifestyle counseling for one year resulted in an average of 8.9 – to 13.3-lb (4- to 6-kg) greater weight loss.
A clinically significant weight loss of 5% of baseline body weight at one year was also consistently achieved by more than one-half of patients treated.
A 10% loss (approximately 22 lb [10 kg]) was achieved in 25% to 33% of patients.
