Losing Weight Injections Wegovy Vs Saxenda
Wegovy (Semaglutide) for Weight Loss
Losing Weight with Semaglutide & Liraglutide GLP-1 Agonists
Both Semaglutide (Wegovy / Ozempic) and Liraglutide (Saxenda) can play an important role at accelerating weight loss in individuals. These medications were only recently approved (2021) for weight loss by the US Food & Drug Administration.
Both of these medications are glucagon like peptides 1, which signal the brain to suppress appetite. This can have enormous positive effects when combined with a healthy diet and exercise program.
Daily weight loss is generally achieved when the medication is combined with a reduced carbohydrate diet since the process is to combat insulin resistance which generally occurs in overweight individuals.
Vacationers Seek Weight Loss Meds in Costa Rica
Weight loss injections using Wegovy and Saxenda are popular among tourists vacationing in Costa Rica. Recently, many US-based medical insurance companies have denied claims for Saxenda or Wegovy for weight loss purposes only.
If the patient is not diabetic, insurance companies don’t want to reimburse claims. Patients must incur the costs if they are to use the medication for weight loss purposes. Costa Rica travel enables patients to get treatment with the same medications from the same manufacturers for about 60% less than in the United States. When you combine physician consultation fees, it saves patients around 70% for treatment. That’s significant. In fact, the cost savings from a 3-month supply of diet treatment may cover most if not all of the patient’s travel expenses to vacation in Costa Rica.
Wegovy (Olympic) and Saxenda are two of the most popular FDA-approved GLP-1 brands for weight loss.
In Costa Rica, Wegovy (Ozempic) and Saxenda are much less expensive than in the United States. It’s the same medication by the same manufacturer, but at a much lower price and tourists are taking advantage of the cost savings when vacationing in Costa Rica.

What's the Difference Between Wegovy and Saxenda
Wegovy (semaglutide) and Saxenda (liraglutide) are both injectable medications FDA-approved for weight loss. Wegovy is injected once weekly. Saxenda is injected once daily.
The first medication FDA-approved for weight loss was Saxenda. More recently, Wegovy has been approved for weight loss. Both were marketed beforehand as diabetic medications.
In a recent study, patients injecting Wegovy saw more weight loss than those who were studied with Saxenda. However, more study is needed to conclude if one medication is superior to the other. The difference in study design, size of the study, and length can all affect outcomes.
How much weight can I lose?
Liraglutide (Saxenda) has been evaluated in two double-blind studies of more than 3,000 obese or overweight patients with hyperlipidemia, hypertension, or diabetes. In both studies, adding liraglutide to lifestyle counseling for one year resulted in an average of 8.9 – to 13.3-lb (4- to 6-kg) greater weight loss.
A clinically significant weight loss of 5% of baseline body weight at one year was also consistently achieved by more than one-half of patients treated.
A 10% loss (approximately 22 lb [10 kg]) was achieved in 25% to 33% of patients.
Additional weight loss can be achieved with ketogenic dieting, fasting, and carbohydrate restriction. Our medical and nutritional team offers additional coaching in this area to help patients safely achieve maximum results.
