Arenal Volcano

Arenal's Worst Eruption of 1968

The worst recorded eruption of Arenal occurred in 1968 when the volcano suddenly erupted after being dormant for around 400 years. The eruption caused widespread destruction in the surrounding area, including the destruction of the town of Tabacón. The eruption also resulted in the deaths of 87 people and the evacuation of several thousand more. The eruption caused significant damage to the local economy, as many people lost their homes and livelihoods.

Since the 1968 eruption, Arenal has continued to be active, with frequent small eruptions and occasionally larger ones. It is currently considered to be in a “moderate” eruptive phase, with intermittent explosive activity and small-to-moderate ash emissions.
