Arenal's Worst Eruption of 1968
The worst recorded eruption of Arenal occurred in 1968 when the volcano suddenly erupted after being dormant for around 400 years. Monteverde is approximately 3-4 hour’s drive from San Jose Costa Rica. It is estimated nearly 70,000 tourists visit Monteverde each year. Most travel to Monteverde by shuttle bus or rental car.
